The Association of Upper Egypt for Education and Development (AUEED) is considered one of the first civil society organizations working in Egypt. The Jesuit Father Henry Ayrout founded AUEED in 1940 with the aim of improving the living conditions of the Egyptian farmers (the Fellah) in Upper Egypt. He believed that the entry point to any development is education. Over the years, the Association's interventions evolved to include a package of integrated development programs. Currently, AUEED works annually with around 75,000 beneficiaries in more than 500 villages, in the governorates of Menya, Assiut, Sohag, Qena and Luxor, and its headquarters is in Cairo.
